Don’t Ever Be Afraid To Be A Beginner - Confidence, Growth & Starting Something New
Don't Ever Be Afraid Of Being A Beginner! (In Anything!)
Confidence, Growth & Starting Something New

Let me tell you something -
Being a beginner is not embarrassing.
It is not 'weak', and it is absolutely not something to apologise for.
It is, quite simply, where everything begins.
And yet, it’s one of the biggest things that holds people back.
✨ THE LIE WE TELL OURSELVES
“I’ll start when I feel more confident.”
“I’ll come to class / go to the gym (etc.) when I’m fitter.”
“I’ll try that when I’m not such a beginner.”
No. You won’t!
Because confidence doesn’t come before you start - it comes because you start.
Every single person you admire. Every performer on stage. Every confident, capable, powerful human being. They all started as beginners who had no idea what they were doing.
And, yes - that was me, too.
✨ FROM BEGINNER TO BOSS LADY
When I first started my business in 1991, I didn’t have a roadmap.
There was no Instagram.
No YouTube tutorials.
No “how to build a burlesque and cabaret empire” handbook.
It was built on instinct, experience, resilience, and a relentless commitment to showing up - and not giving up each time things got bloody hard.
I learned through:
- Trying
- Failing
- Adjusting
- Repeating the above - many, many times!
- Showing up again anyway
And that’s still the process now.
Because here’s the harsh truth that most people don’t want to hear:
✨ THERE IS NO SHORTCUT PAST BEING A BEGINNER
You cannot skip it.
You cannot 'life hack' it.
You cannot magically arrive fully formed.
Whether it’s:
- Dance
- Fitness
- Business
- Performing
- Confidence
- Life in general
You will always have a “Day One.”
And Day One will feel:
- Awkward
- Uncomfortable
- Exposing
- A bit bloody terrifying
GOOD! That means you’re doing it properly.
✨ WHAT BEING A BEGINNER ACTUALLY MEANS
It means:
- You’re brave enough to try
- You're open to learning
- You're stepping outside your comfort zone
- You're investing in yourself
That is not weakness. That is power.
Beginners don't have bad habits to unlearn. They have something even more valuable - an open mind and the opportunity to build strong foundations from day one.
✨ IN MY CLASSES – THIS MATTERS
This is exactly why, at The Velvet Burlesque™, I structure everything the way I do.
You are not expected to walk in and know what you’re doing.
You are expected to simply:
- Show up
- Try
- Repeat
- TRUST THE PROCESS! (One of my favourite phrases!)
Every routine is broken down step-by-step.
Every session includes repetition and revision.
Every single person in that room started somewhere.
No one is watching you thinking “they’re a beginner.” They’re thinking: “They showed up - just like I once did.”
✨ THE REAL RISK ISN’T STARTING – IT’S NOT STARTING
Let’s flip it for a second.
What actually happens if you don’t start?
- You stay stuck
- You stay frustrated
- You stay wondering “what if?”
And months (or years) go by anyway. The time will pass regardless.
The only question is: Do you still want to be standing at the starting line, or be miles down the road?
✨ BOSS LADY WISDOM
You do not need to feel ready.
You need to be willing.
Start messy.
Start nervous.
Start unsure.
But START.
Because the version of you who is confident, skilled, and powerful?
That version is built - step by step - by the beginner who simply decided to show up anyway.
